HomePod Mini with iOS14.4 new update brings “Relay” function, displaying audio, and visual feedback

The iOS 14.4 test version launched today does not seem to contain any new features, but the matching HomePod 14.4 test version will introduce new features to the HomePod mini. The new features take advantage of the U1 ultra Broadband chip.

HomePod beta software is not provided to developers like iOS and macOS beta software but to a limited number of testers selected by Apple. One of the testers shared details and screenshots on Reddit.

When the HomePod mini was launched, Apple stated that the update “later this year” will bring visual, auditory, and tactile effects when songs are transferred from one device to another. While the iPhone next to the HomePod mini will also appear personalized song suggestions, and equipped with instant control function, you can use it without unlocking the iPhone.

According to the tester, when the iPhone is close to the HomePod mini, the phone will start a soft vibration rhythm. As the iPhone gets closer, the rhythm will become faster and faster, until the interface for transferring songs between the HomePod mini and the iPhone is opened. Use Apple’s words It means “you can feel that the two devices are actually connected together, and the music flows from one device to the other.”

When your phone is 40 cm away from the HomePod, the banner will be displayed. Any miniature phone movement will produce tactile feedback. As you move to the HomePod, the tactile feedback will become stronger. If you go too far, it will weaken, go too far and stop, and the banner will disappear.

This feature will make the “relay” of HomePod mini and iPhone 11 or iPhone 12 faster and more reliable. All of these devices are equipped with U1 chips, allowing devices to better understand each other’s positional relationship.
