Microsoft to release a major update for the Android version of Edge browser

Posted on

Microsoft Edge browser for Android was first launched as early as 2017, and it is constantly getting updates and new features on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, when Chrome and other browsers are using Chromium 87 with better performance and functional compatibility, the Android version of Edge is still based on Chromium 77. Therefore, Chrome and other mobile browsers perform better than the Android version of Edge.

According to the latest statement, Microsoft is going all out to develop Edge for Android, but there are reasons for the current slow development of the mobile version. Microsoft is currently trying to make the code base of the Android version of Edge and the desktop version the same.

Once the migration is complete, Microsoft Edge for Android will begin to update more frequently, it will be upgraded to Chromium 87 or newer, and support new Fluent Design elements. There is no timetable yet, but Microsoft said it will share more information next year.

Extended support

Microsoft also confirmed that it has suspended the development of mobile extension support, but the company has not given up on this idea.

“We will continue to monitor user interest in this and other competing priorities and re-examine the priorities when necessary,” Microsoft said.

History synchronization

Although the migration to the new version of Chromium is expected to be completed next year, Microsoft has already begun to bring history synchronization to its Edge browser on mobile devices, at least for users with Android phones.

This will allow users to synchronize their browsing history on all devices running the old and new Microsoft Edge browsers. According to user reports, this feature can be used in the Edge 45.11.24.5118 version or later.

In addition to the Android version, the Linux version of Edge browser is also expected to be better developed next year.

In general, Microsoft said that it cannot promise to catch up with the specific timetable for Windows and macOS features, but the “log in and synchronization” of Microsoft accounts is the highest priority item on the current Linux version of the Edge browser.
