In the past, when a user visited the GitHub website, a banner prompting cookies would pop up every time. The user had to click “Allow” or “Reject” to make it disappear.
Recently, Microsoft announced that it will remove all unnecessary cookies from the GitHub website so that a prompt banner will not pop up to disturb users.
According to the regulations of the European Union and some other countries and regions, if a website wants to utilize local cookies to store important information and collect detail about the user’s visit to the site, a prompt banner needs to be displayed.
This is convenient for users who frequently visit the same website to perform automatic login and other operations. Some cookie files are also used for website browsing analysis and targeted advertisement display.
The head of GitHub, Nat Friedman (Nat Friedman) explained in an article why this is necessary. He said that at GitHub we want to protect the privacy of developers, and we also find the cookie prompts very annoying.
So we got a solution, which is to remove unnecessary cookie functions, which is very simple. Since unnecessary cookies have been deleted, GitHub no longer has to send information to third-party analysis services.
Friedman emphasized, ‘ GitHub does not use any cookies to display advertisements or track users’ browsing. It has not done so before and will not do so in the future’.
