SMIC to negotiate with ASML for EUV lithography machine

According to reports, industry observers said that with the help of the new vice-chairman Jiang Shangyi, Chinese chip giant SMIC will seek negotiations with Dutch semiconductor equipment company ASML (ASML) on EUV lithography equipment.

According to reports, SMIC has been having difficulty obtaining EUV lithography equipment from Asmer. Although Asmer is not legally affected by certain restrictions, it still has concerns.

However, according to industry observers, with the help of the new vice-chairman Jiang Shangyi, SMIC will seek negotiations with Asim for EUV lithography equipment.

On Tuesday evening, SMIC issued an announcement stating that Jiang Shangyi was appointed as the vice-chairman of the board of directors, the second type of executive director, and a member of the strategy committee, effective from December 15, 2020.

EUV lithography (ie extreme ultraviolet lithography) uses light with a very short wavelength to form billions of tiny structures on a silicon wafer to form a chip. Compared with older lithography machines, EUV equipment can produce smaller, faster, and more powerful chips.

According to reports, SMIC plans to use EUV lithography machines to produce chip products based on process technology below 7 nanometers. Recently, some media reported that SMIC has gone from the 20nm process to the 3nm process. The only thing missing is the EUV lithography machine. With the EUV lithography machine, SMIC can also mass-produce 3nm chips.

When the U.S. stock market closed yesterday, Asim’s stock price closed at $477.30, up 1.2%. Today, SMIC’s share price closed at 55.02 yuan, a decline of 1.77%.
