At present, if the user accidentally presses the Alt+F4 keyboard shortcut or clicks the close button of the window, the Microsoft Edge or Chrome browser will close without any warning.
Unexpectedly closing multiple web pages often makes users very frustrated. The good news is that Microsoft is now working on a solution to prevent this from happening.
Based on the experimental flags found in the Canary build, users will soon be able to enable tag protection in Microsoft Edge.
Users only need to enter the Microsoft Edge settings and enable the “Ask before closing multiple tabs” option, as shown below:
Once enabled, Microsoft Edge for Windows 10 and macOS will display pop-up warnings when users try to close multiple active tabs. The warning will provide two options: “Close all” to exit the browser, and “Cancel” to continue using the browser. Users can also select “Don’t ask me again” in the pop-up dialog box to disable this feature without opening Edge’s settings page.
Microsoft Edge’s solution is very careful, when the user only opens a tab, it will not warn the user. The warning will only appear when the user opens multiple tabs. However, in the future, if the user tries to log out, it will be possible to always provide a warning.
If users want to test this feature now, they need to install the Edge Canary version and enable the experimental flag labeled “Ask before closing multiple tabs”.
This feature is expected to arrive in the stable version of Microsoft Edge early next year. In addition, Microsoft is also developing a new solid color theme for Edge, improving the Android version, and speeding up the startup.
