Musk said that he will produce his own batteries in the future, in the face of the increasing demand and sales of Tesla models, a considerable part of the batteries will still come from suppliers.

As per the news, Panasonic is building a production line to produce Tesla 4680 batteries at its existing factory, which is scheduled to be officially opened in 2021.

The report stated that the production of prototype batteries will begin next year and may lead to a new supply agreement with Tesla. Panasonic will build a prototype production line on existing facilities. The cost of the project is expected to reach tens of millions of dollars.

At the ‘Battery Day’ event in September this year, Tesla released a brand new 4680 battery. The battery has a diameter of 46mm and a length of 80mm. The energy density of the cell is increased by 5 times, and the power output is increased by 6 times.

When applied to mass-produced vehicles, the cruising range can be increased by 16%, and the cost per kWh can be saved by 14% only in the battery link.

It is worth mentioning that this battery also uses laser-engraved electrodeless ear technology, removes the main heating components of the battery, reduces the internal resistance, and has higher thermal stability and controllability of the battery.

In terms of innovative manufacturing and assembly, Musk said that the 4680 battery saved a total of about 86% of the cost. Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, electric vehicles have more cost advantages.

Currently, the new batteries are only produced in the pilot plant in Fremont, but Tesla has already produced batteries at the Gigafactory in Berlin and other locations.
