Toshiba announced an expansion of 30% and accelerated shipments of 18TB hard drives in 2021

A few years ago, due to the fierce competition of SSD hard drives, HDD hard drive shipments have declined.

The three major manufacturers of Seagate, Western Digital, and Toshiba have had a hard time. Unexpectedly, HDD will also encounter spring in 2020.

Benefiting from the data center market, Toshiba announced an expansion of 30% and accelerated shipments of 18TB hard drives.

In the HDD hard drive market, there are currently three companies, Seagate, Western Digital, and Toshiba.

The first two have the largest scale. Q1 Seagate’s share is 43%, Western Digital’s share is 36%, and Toshiba’s share is 21%, which is half less than the previous two. Technical HDD hard drives also lag behind.

However, Toshiba has now decided to increase production. The factory in the Philippines is adding assembly and test production lines.

It is expected that HDD production capacity will increase by 30% in the fiscal year 2021 (starting on April 1 next year), mainly for the data center market. Toshiba hopes to increase this The share in one area has expanded to 20%.

Currently, Toshiba is 1-2 quarters behind in large-capacity HDD hard drives. Western Digital and Seagate’s 18TB hard drives have already been shipped, and 20TB hard drives have also been delivered for testing.

Toshiba expects 18TB hard drives to be shipped before March 2021. As for the 20TB hard drive, Toshiba’s previous roadmap shows that the company will only launch it within the 2021 fiscal year.

It will use helium filling technology and MAMR microwave-assisted magnetic recording technology. The route is similar to Western Digital’s.
