Intel Z590 motherboard 11th generation i3 and below vest CPUs will not support PCIe 4.0

Intel is about to officially release the 11th-generation desktop processor and the supporting 500 series motherboard chipset. The new chipset will fully support the PCIe 4.0 protocol. According to wccftech report, several Intel Z590 motherboards have been sent for testing. The PCIe slot on the top of each motherboard has a PCIe 4.0 sticker.

However, not all 11th generation CPUs support PCIe 4.0. Intel’s 11th-generation processor is code-named Rocker Lake. According to previously exposed information, it will include the i9/i7/i5/i3 series, in addition to the Pentium and Celeron series.

However, Intel’s 11th generation i3 and below desktop CPUs still use the previous generation Comet Lake architecture instead of the latest Rocket Lake-S. Therefore, it is expected that only i9/i7/i5 series CPUs support PCIe 4.0.

Intel’s 11th generation CPU will continue to use the previous generation LGA 1200 interface, and the Z490 motherboard will also support the 11th generation CPU. In addition, it is reported that the Z490 motherboard will also support the PCIe 4.0 protocol, which can be turned on with the 11th generation Rocket Lake-S desktop processor.

The motherboard manufacturers represented by Asustek will pay special attention to providing hardware-level PCIe 4.0 support on Z590 and Z490 motherboards.

Intel’s next-generation platform not only supports PCIe 4.0 but also adds DDR4-3200 memory support. The new core graphics card also brings great performance improvements, supporting up to 4K 60fps, 12bit color depth video encoding capabilities, and AV1 video format support.

Intel’s 11th-generation desktop processors and 500-series motherboards will be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show on January 11.
