Apple rumored to expand LiDAR Scanner to entire iPhone 13 lineup

Posted on

In the iPhone 12 series models released last year, Apple equipped the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max models with LiDAR lidar to provide depth-sensing functions.

According to 9to5Mac report, the ordering supply chain report, Apple will be equipped with LiDAR lidar for the entire iPhone 13 series this year, not just the “Pro” model.

The report also pointed out that Apple has signed an agreement with Sony to guarantee that LiDAR will be used in the iPhone at least before 2023.

LiDAR is the abbreviation of “light detection and ranging”, and the first Apple product equipped with this technology is the 2020 iPad Pro. Previously, this technology was mainly used in the automotive industry.

Lidar systems can use light pulses to accurately measure the distance from an object to the camera lens. Using the relevant data, the camera can autofocus more accurately and better distinguish between foreground and background to create effects such as portrait mode. The depth camera will also help augmented reality applications to place digital objects in real environments more realistically.
