19nm SLC flash memory is not dead, Macronix relies on it this year
Due to cost advantages, the mainstream NAND flash memory on the market has become TLC and QLC. MLC is very rare, and SLC flash memory is even rarer, and it has almost disappeared in the consumer market.
In terms of flash memory types, SLC flash memory has the best performance and highest reliability, but the cost is too expensive.
Samsung, Western Digital, Kaixia, Micron and other companies actually have SLC flash memory production capacity, which is only used for special occasions, mainly In some industrial and embedded products that require high reliability but not high capacity.
Additionally, to the original flash memory factory, Taiwan’s Macronix also has its own SLC flash memory. Last year, it developed and mass-produced 19nm SLC flash memory and began shipping to US customers for use in set-top boxes and other products.
Currently, the price of the SLC flash memory market is relatively stable, and sales are expected to grow. Macronix Chairman Wu Minqiu is also optimistic about the revenue of SLC flash memory this year and believes that it will make a considerable contribution.
Macronix recently announced the December 2020 revenue report. Consolidated revenue was 3.306 billion yuan (NTD, the same below), an increase of 9.9% month-on-month and a year-on-year increase of 24.2%.
Q4 revenue reached 10.157 billion yuan, compared with the third quarter. In the peak season, the high-end 10.957 billion yuan only fell by 7.29%, and the performance is still not weaker than before.
Consolidated revenue for the full year of 2020 reached 39.801 billion yuan, a record high, an increase of 13.7% over 2019.
