Google Wear operating system will support custom third-party Tiles

Posted on

According to news, Google is working hard to enable third-party Android developers to create their own custom tiles for Wear OS applications.

Google made a major change to Wear OS. Google smartwatches acquired the Tiles function, and users can add favorite apps to the watch face in the form of similar widgets.

In the most recent update, Wear OS has lifted the limit of having up to five tiles. However, since the release of this feature, only Google’s built-in Wear OS apps (such as Google Fit and Weather App) can create tiles.

As per the report, the latest code changes released to the Android open source project indicate that Google is actively developing the ‘Wear Tiles API’ to allow Wear OS application developers to create custom Tiles.

There are multiple references to ‘androidx’ in the code that indicates that the function of creating Tiles will serve as an update to the ‘Wear’ library of Android Jetpack. After a superficial reading, the API seems to be similar to the unofficial reverse engineering method of creating custom Wear OS Tiles, but not exactly the same.

Considering that it entered the review process only a few weeks ago and seems to be still undergoing changes, Wear OS app developers may have to wait a few more months to create a custom tile.
