Epic: It has acquired software development company RAD Game Tools that will help develop Unreal Engine

 Epic officially announced on January 8 that it has confirmed that it has acquired the software development company RAD Game Tools, as well as the company’s technology and business.

The tools developed by RAD Game Tools are used by approximately 25,000 games around the world, including large companies including Epic. Epic said that it will work with RAD to apply powerful technology to the Unreal Engine to benefit game developers and players.

The software developed by RAD Game Tools includes video encoding tool Bink 2, data compression tool Oodle, program optimization tool Telemetry, 3D plug-in Granny 3D, etc. Epic said that as game development becomes more realistic and powerful, developers need to use first-class compression software to manage growing data demands without reducing quality.

The two companies will work closely to improve key technologies in the Unreal Engine. Additionally, RAD will continue to retain its sales and development teams to serve previous industry customers.
