Nokia wins Tele2 operator multi-regional 5G SA core contract

Before the Swedish spectrum auction was regarding come, Tele2 chose Nokia to give a standalone (SA) 5G core network for its home market.

The operator stated in a statement that the cooperation also covers the deployment of SA 5G core networks and facilities to implement 5G voice in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia.

The installation of the infrastructure is supposed to take several years and will start later in 2021.

Raghav Sahgal, president of Nokia’s cloud and network business, stated that the transaction is based on a long-term partnership between the two parties that dates back to the 1990s.

Last year, Tele2 will use the existing spectrum to launch non-independent networking 5G services in parts of Sweden, although nationwide coverage has to wait for the country’s delayed spectrum auction to be completed.

With the victory in the competitor’s home market this time, Nokia is embarking on a comprehensive restructuring to focus on key business areas and make up for lost ground in the global 5G market.
