As per the report, Wine lately got an update to improve the experience of running Windows applications on Linux systems. The update comes in the form of Win3 6.0, and according to its full launch notes, it includes more than 8,300 changes.
Wine is a compatibility layer that permits you to run thousands of Windows applications on Linux systems. Wine currently supports more than 27,000 Windows apps and games, but it is worth noting that some games need special configuration.
Popular supported applications and games include Office, Adobe Photoshop, and World of Warcraft. There are thousands of changes in the newly launched 6.0 version, but the Wine website highlights some of the biggest improvements:
- The core module of PE format
- Vulkan backend for WineD3D.
- DirectShow and Media Foundation support.
- The text console has been redesigned.
The complete launch notes of Wine 6.0 stated that core DLLs, including NTDLL, KERNEL32, GDI32, and USER32, are now built-in Portable Executable (PE) format. Therefore, people should see some improvements in copy protection schemes.
The update also includes a new mechanism to associate Unix libraries with PE modules. This change permits the system to call Unix libraries from PE when trying to perform functions that the Win32 API cannot handle.
Wine 6.0 also includes an experimental Vulkan rendering that can translate Direct3D shaders into SPIR-V shaders. In another Direct3D-related change, the Direct3D graphics database can now identify more graphics cards and include updated driver versions.
