Global communications and digital media research firm Omdia today published ‘Apple’s Display Technology Roadmap 2021-2023′, they believe that Apple is gradually adding more to the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook series.
FOR many OLED screen products, it is supposed that the 2021 iPhone (iPhone13) will utilize an LTPO backplane and support 90, 120Hz refresh rates.
The agency predicts that the Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch model will use mini LED-backlit tablet panels for the first time this year, and the Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch will also use mini LED-backlit notebook panels for the first time.
Omdia stated: In 2021, the use of mini LED-backlit LCD panels in iPad and MacBook may be a short-term solution; in the long run, iPad and MacBook will tend to use more OLEDs in high-end models.
The agency predicted the Apple Display development roadmap for 2021-2023 through the roadmap released by Apple last year.
The following is a brief excerpt of some of the key points of the forecast:
- 2021 iPhone (iPhone13) uses LTPO backplane instead of LTPS. Samsung Display and LG Display are ready to supply LTPO backplane for Apple iPhone 13 in 2021. BOE, one of the current iPhone 12 screen suppliers, has not disclosed.
- The new iPhone (iPhone 13) will have more new display technologies, such as ToF, Face ID, and Touch ID for augmented reality (AR), and high refresh rates of 90Hz and 120Hz.
- Apple will be the first to adopt mini LED backlights in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and 16-inch MacBook products.
- LG Display and Sharp are the main suppliers of oxide TFT panels for iPad and MacBook. LG Display and Sharp will also be major suppliers of LCD panels equipped with mini LED backlights.
- In 2022, iPad and MacBook will adopt Hybrid OLED (Hybrid OLED) technology. Hybrid OLED has an OLED panel with a thin glass substrate but uses a flexible film encapsulation.
- Apple may launch a 7.3-7.6-inch foldable OLED smartphone in 2023. The use of an OLED display will integrate good functions into a main foldable display. In addition, Apple may add an active pen to its foldable iPhone.
- In 2023, Apple will release OLED desktop displays. With the opening of the OLED market for Apple Watch, iPhone and iPad, it is expected that Apple MacBook and desktop displays will follow closely, including the latest QD OLED products.
