Intel recently confirmed that the old B460/H410 motherboard chipset will not support the upcoming 11th generation Rocket Lake-S desktop processors that disappoint many PC players.
The Israeli media Hardware Zone asked Intel and obtained an explanation for the incompatibility. Intel said that the B460/H410 PCH chips are manufactured using the old 22nm process technology, while the mid-to-high-end Z490/H470 chipsets are manufactured using the 14nm process.
Additionally, the management engine (Intel ME) used by the B460/H410 chipset is also an old version. This engine is a protocol for the communication between the PCH chip and the CPU. The microstructure of the new version of the chipset has also changed, so the two chipsets cannot theoretically communicate with the 11th generation CPU.
Gigabyte-based motherboard producers seem to have found a solution, launching V2 versions of B460 and H410 motherboards to support Intel’s 11th generation CPU. But the V2 version of the motherboard actually uses the H470 chipset.
