The father of Android had started a business in a smartphone but failed miserably. According to the latest news, a co-founder of China OnePlus has acquired Rubin’s smartphone brand ‘Essential’.
According to reports, Pei Yu, the co-founder of China’s OnePlus Technology Corporation, recently established a new technology company named ‘Nothing’.
Some media quoted the British Intellectual Property Office’s regulatory documents as saying that Nothing had acquired the Essential mobile phone brand.
Rubin is the inventor of the famous Android operating system. He left Google in embarrassment in a sexual harassment scandal, and then started his own business in the smartphone industry again and launched the ‘Essential’ smartphone.
Rubin claimed to compete with Apple and Samsung in the high-end mobile phone market, but the sales of the only mobile phone released were very bleak, and Rubin’s entrepreneurial dream was shattered.
According to reports, Nothing’s acquisition of this brand was completed on January 6 this year, just before Pei Yu officially announced the establishment of Nothing. This acquisition involves related trademarks, logos, and other brand assets.
It is unclear what product Nothing company intends to use the Essential brand to develop, or what kind of project it is engaged in. Additionally to smartphones, Essential has also envisaged the release of smart home products, but these plans have been cancelled.
As per the report, Rubin’s later time at Google was not glorious. Rubin got US$90 million in compensation before leaving Google that aroused strong dissatisfaction and criticism from Google employees.
It is reported that nothing will declare new product information in the future, and the outside world will learn about the new use of the Essential brand.
