Google becomes highest-level sponsor of Python Software Foundation

The Python Software Foundation (PSF), Google has recently become the organization’s highest-level sponsor: Visionary Sponsor, which means a visionary sponsor. The announcement document stated that Google has contributed a lot of investment to the Python programming language and the community.

It not only helped the company develop its own use of the Python language but also provided Python as a part of Google’s products to their customers. Google is the first sponsor to receive the highest level of PSF.

PSF announced that the funds sponsored by Google will be used for a series of new PSF programs, including compensation for the first CPython resident developer.

Additionally, the funds will also be used for key supply chain security improvements, including PyPI development and productization of malware detection, dynamic analysis infrastructure prototypes for distribution, and other basic tool improvements, to become a sponsor of the Visionary Sponsor level, it needs to sponsor $150,000 to the foundation.

In 2019, the PSF agency awarded $324,000 to developers in 60 different countries and regions and donated $138,000 to 140 participants through the PyCon financial assistance program. In addition to Google, Python’s main donors include Salesforce, Fastly, Bloomberg, Microsoft, Capital One, etc.
