OmniVision today released 50 million pixels 1/1.55′ mobile phone CMOS-OV50A, only revealed that the sensor will be available in the second quarter of 2021, but did not specify specific customers.
This sensor is built using OmniVision’s PureCel Plus-S stacked chip technology, with a unit pixel up to 1.0μm, supports Quad Phase Detection (QPD) focusing, and can achieve 2×2 PDAF coverage of 100%, claiming to provide “DSLR level” autofocus performance.
The operation of QPD autofocus technology is different from Canon’s Dual Pixel AF technology. Canon has only two pixels on the left and right under a single microlens, while OmniVision pairs the four pixels of each microlens diagonally to achieve focus.
The advantage of this design is that the four diagonal pixels give cross-shaped (horizontal and vertical) sensitivity, and stable performance can be obtained regardless of the orientation of the camera and the subject.
Additionally, OV50A also supports four-in-one pixels, equivalent to 12.5 million pixels, 2.0μm, supports Staggered HDR, 8K 30fps, 4K 90fps, 1080P 240fps, and 720P 480fps video. The maximum video output can reach 3.5Gbps through the CPHY MIPI interface of the sensor.
