Apple’s iPhone 12 hardware supports reverse wireless charging

Despite hardware support, Apple is unlikely to add reverse wireless charging to the iPhone in the near future. Reverse wireless charging is to change the back of a mobile phone with wireless charging function from ‘receiving side’ to “transmitting side”, charging other products.

It is not a rare feature, Android phones such as Samsung/Huawei/Xiaomi have already supported it. The development of the MagSafe magnetic battery accessory for iPhone 12 that Apple ‘internally discussed the idea of allowing some devices to reverse charge through the iPhone. However, this feature is unlikely to be released in the near future.

In fact, when the iPhone 11 series was released in 2019, Apple had a similar plan, but it was later canceled. Earlier this week, iOS 14.5 suggested the existence of MagSafe battery accessories.

The test version of the system code shows: “In order to improve the charging efficiency and maximize the life of the battery, the battery pack will keep the charging capacity of the phone at about 90%.”

Apple has been studying the ability of devices to charge each other. A patent discovered in January reveals the concept of a future MacBook that wirelessly charges iPhone or Apple Watch on both sides of the trackpad. The patent envisages an ecosystem in which devices charge each other and may also synchronize data.

Although the feature has not been officially released, the hardware is actually supported. According to FCC documents, all models in the iPhone 12 series can reverse charge the accessories through the back. At this time, the iPhone will be used for wireless charging.

Apple can enable this feature through an iOS system upgrade, although there is no indication that the company will do so. Of course, Apple never shows unreleased features.
