Nintendo intends to release a 7-inch display Switch this year, using Samsung OLED screen
Nintendo is purchasing OLED panels from Samsung and intends to release a new Switch later this year. According to reports, the new version of the Switch utilizes a larger 7-inch high-definition display. The production of the screen will begin in June at the earliest.
The new version of the Switch may be officially released in the holiday season of 2021. The person who did not want to be named to discuss internal affairs said that Samsung Display will begin mass production of 7-inch 720-resolution OLED panels in June at the earliest, with an initial monthly target of fewer than 1 million units.
These displays are scheduled to be shipped to assemblers around July. The current Nintendo Switch is equipped with a 6.2-inch LCD display with a high-definition resolution, while the Nintendo Switch Lite is equipped with a smaller 5.5-inch display with the same resolution.
There have been rumors about upgraded Switch models for some time, but the company has refuted these claims in the past, emphasizing that it is currently focusing on the two existing Switch models.
After upgrading to an OLED display, it can provide better colors, deeper blacks, and better contrast. In addition, the OLED panel consumes less battery power that means longer battery life. However, Nintendo utilizes a rigid OLED screen. Although it is cheap, it is more fragile than the flexible OLED panels found on many high-end smartphones.
It is unclear whether Nintendo will utilize high refresh rate OLED panels on the upcoming Switch console. However, the report quoted sources as saying that Nintendo’s new console will support 4K games when connected to a TV.
