Linux Kernel 5.12-rc1 causing critical system damages

Linux kernel version 5.12-rc1 was launched on March 2. Linus itself stated that the new version has brought a lot of historical cleanup work and deleted drivers that are no longer useful.

However, on the second day after the launch, Linus immediately sent an urgent email telling everyone not to use the latest Linux 5.12-rc1 kernel and asked maintainers not to create new branches from this kernel.

Linus has changed the kennel name ‘v5.12-rc1’ to ‘v5.12-rc1-donuts’ that means not to use it. The cause of the problem with this kernel is that the swap function has failed, causing the swapfile to read/write offset to be misaligned.

This failure will cause the swap function to overwrite a large number of normal files, resulting in damage to the file system that cannot be mounted and used.

After the emergency announcement of the fault, the Linux kernel development team quickly fixed the fault and released the Linux 5.12-rc2 version on March 6, which users can download and use with confidence.
