Google Wear OS began custom third-party Tiles, and developers can create apps widgets by themselves

Last year, Google made a major change to Wear OS. Google smartwatches gained the Tiles function. Users can add their favorite apps to the watch face in the form of similar widgets.

However, since the release of this feature, only Google’s built-in Wear OS apps can create tiles. Recently, on the Google Developer Forum, Android engineers released the Jetpack Tiles library for Wear OS, which means that all developers can create custom Tiles for third-party applications on Wear OS.

The Jetpack Tiles library is still in the Alpha stage and users cannot use it yet, but developers can already create custom Tiles for their Wear OS applications.

The next update of Wear OS is expected in April when users can experience third-party Tiles similar to Android widgets.

It is worth mentioning that there are reports that Samsung is developing a smartwatch running Wear OS. OnePlus will also release its first smartwatch on March 24, which is also expected to be equipped with Wear OS.
