Microsoft Win10 21H1 preview update improves file explorer performance

Posted on

The upcoming Windows 10 version 21H1 seems to finally fix a long-standing bug in File Explorer. After the November 2019 update, some users have always believed that there is a problem with the integrated search platform of File Explorer that aims to give a faster search experience through the new preview user interface.

With the May 2020 update of Windows 10, Microsoft has solved the performance problem of the search bar and restored support for the right button. However, there are still users complaining that the file explorer window freezes and ‘explorer.exe’ causes high resource usage.

A few days ago, Microsoft began to launch a new cumulative update Build 19043.899 for the preview version of Windows 10 21H1. This update finally fixes a rare issue that may cause explorer.exe to occupy a high amount of memory.

Microsoft also fixed an issue where when you click on the filter, the column header will get stuck on the ‘calculation filter’ or do nothing, as shown in the screenshot. In the test, we observed that this error also exists in the Windows 10 20H2/2004 version, and the column header will never actually display any filtering content.

It’s worth noting that this happens only when you search in File Explorer and click the arrow next to the column header to see the available filter list of search results. Additionally, to better performance and improvements to the search filter, Microsoft also resolved an issue that could cause the File Explorer window to stop responding for several minutes.

This problem is only encountered when you reconnect to the network and use a mapped drive. Although most of the critical issues have now been fixed, the rare error that the File Explorer search box stopped responding to is still unresolved.

In addition to the changes in the file explorer, Windows 10 version 21H1 will also bring new options for Windows Hello settings, general quality improvements, and so on.
