Chinese battery maker BAK Battery took the lead to launch 4680 cylindrical batteries, ahead of the schedule of electric vehicle producer Tesla.
Li Dan, vice president of BAK Battery, revealed that the 4 series is currently mainly customized, that is, joint development, and will be mass-produced by the end of next year. Non-customized products will be available in the second half of this year.
According to statistics, before the mass production of batteries with a diameter of 46mm (4680), most batteries on the market were 18mm (18650) and 21mm (21700). The 4680 BAK battery is currently calibrated to 25Ah, far exceeding the 3Ah of the 18650 battery.
On this basis, the battery pack composed of 8,000 batteries in the past now only requires 1,000 batteries that the requirements for BMS to a certain extent.
As early as September 2020, Tesla proposed the 4680 battery concept on ‘Battery Day’ and plans to mass-produce the battery in Berlin, Germany. LG Chem’s LG Energy Solutions of South Korea has also stated that it has begun research and development of 4680 batteries.
It has already started testing the production line and will begin production in 2023. However, LG stated that it has already produced samples of 4680 batteries, but it still needs to overcome ‘technical barriers’ for mass production.
