The Verizon transaction covers the operation of a dedicated 5G network in the Port of Southampton. Verizon said the network will provide secure, low-latency connections and will be the first such network in a British port.
Approximately £40 billion worth of export goods passes through the Port of Southampton every year, making it one of the busiest ports in the UK.
Verizon pointed out that the 5G network will solve the ” urgent problem of on-site data communication loss due to poor Wi-Fi connection ” and lay the foundation for technologies including real-time analysis, the Internet of Things, and machine learning. It will eventually support asset tracking and automatic Navigation vehicles and predictive maintenance applications.
Verizon Business CEO Tami Erwin added that the deployment will enable the port to “make full use of new technology applications and real-time analysis, which will digitally transform its services in the future ”.
