Google acquires Dysonics, a 3D audio startup which has spatial audio technology

Google recently acquired a start-up company Dysonics that focuses on 3D audio technology. According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (by protocol), this acquisition was filed in December last year.

The start-up company Dysonics has developed a wireless motion sensor for the headset, called Rondo Motion, which modifies the sound output based on the user’s head rotation (similar to VR spatial awareness). Dysonics has also worked with Virgin Atlantic to bring its 3D audio to the aircraft’s entertainment system.

According to the patent, this technology is used in a system and method, which is configured to receive signals representing the outputs of multiple microphones that are positioned, and the signals are positioned to represent the left and right ears in the sound field at the local location.

The sound field is sampled at the point when the microphone is sampled, the position of at least one sound source relative to the plurality of microphones is received, the orientation data of the listener’s head is received, and the sound source position, the microphone output signal, and The direction data calculates the binaural output.

Google has never made this acquisition public before and maybe preparing for its new Pixel Buds. If 3D audio technology can be carried on Pixel Buds, then the headset will become a strong competitor to Apple’s AirPods.
