Sennheiser has just launched an external microphone accessory specially designed for creators to make it easy for everyone to use when recording with a consumer-grade camera or mobile phone.
First of all, the upgraded hot-shoe MKE 400 gun microphone has been improved in many details. Such as the included windshield, built-in headphone port, and the ability to directly turn on or off through the camera.
In addition to being mounted on the camera hot shoe (supplied with a standard TRS cable that supports SLR/Mirrorless cameras), the new MEK 400 gun microphone can also be used with mobile devices such as mobile phones or tablets.
For mobile phone users who use a USB-C or Lighting to 3.5mm audio adapter, the built-in headphone jack on the microphone can also conveniently listen when shooting with a camera that only has a microphone input (not a headphone output).

For users who prefer competing products such as Rhode’s VideoMic Pro, this MEK 400 upgrade also makes up for the old version’s inability to open and close automatically and the outdated design.
However, the power consumption after the upgrade has also increased. In the case of the same use of one AAA battery, the old version can last for 300 hours, while the new version can only use 100 when using two AAA batteries.
The good news is that Sennheiser’s new MEK 400 gun wheat is still priced at US$199.95 (about 1309 RMB).
Secondly, for creators who want good sound quality but don’t want to use a large gun-shaped microphone, the new Xs Lav microphone can be worn on a shirt tie or lapel more easily.
In terms of accessories, one of them is a 3.5mm TRRS jack and the other is a USB-C adapter, which can be easily connected to an Android smartphone or a Mac computer.
Although there were also Lighting microphone accessories for iPhone before, it seems to be gradually fading out of the market, so iPhone users should still use 3.5mm adapters.
In terms of price, the 3.5mm version of the XS Lav Lavalier is priced at US$49.95 (approximately 327 RMB), and the USB-C version is US$59.95 (approximately 392 RMB). Both are lower than the US$79 (approximately 517 RMB) price. German smartLav Plus is more affordable.
Finally, Sennheiser also provided a “mobile package” for MEK 400 and XS Lav USB-C. You can get a small tripod + mobile phone holder for an extra 30 US dollars (about 196 RMB).
