Tencent Indonesia’s first data center is put into use, starting global expansion
On April 12, Tencent Indonesia’s first data center was put into use in Jakarta, and a second data center will be opened in the next few months. In addition, Tencent will also set up data centers in Thailand and South Korea. According to Tencent, in the future, it will actively invest in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe to set up more data centers.
So far, Tencent Cloud has operated 60 availability zones in 27 geographic regions around the world, most of which are located in China and the Asia-Pacific region, including Singapore, Tokyo, Mumbai, Seoul, Moscow, Toronto, and Frankfurt. Tencent entered the cloud market about ten years ago, and there are currently more than 40 data centers in China alone.
Three years ago, Tencent Cloud began to expand internationally. In Overseas, Tencent currently operates approximately 19-20 data centers. Moreover, Tencent added a data center in South Korea. Last month, Tencent claimed that it would build a data center in Bahrain before the end of the year to provide support for the Middle East and North Africa.
In an interview, Poshu Yeung, senior vice president of Tencent Cloud International, said that” in Indonesia, Tencent services are becoming more and more popular. For example, the JOOX music streaming app is already the second-ranked music app in Indonesia. Tencent also launched WeTV in Indonesia last year and plans to produce more localized content this year.
In addition, Tencent games will also enter Indonesia. Because of the strong demand, Tencent will set up a data center in Indonesia. In August this year, the second Indonesian data center may also be put into use. Yang Baoshu emphasized that Tencent has launched two data centers in the same country within a year, which has not been done before“.
Yang Baoshu also said that” 2020 is a difficult year for many businesses, but the cloud market is growing strongly, which is true for global players and also for Tencent. The growth rate of Tencent’s international cloud business reached triple digits last year, and this year is still able to maintain the growth rate. The second data center will be opened in Thailand soon, and the data center in Japan will also be put into use in June“.
In an interview with the South China Morning Post, Yang Baoshu told reporters: “This year, our global cloud infrastructure investment will increase greatly. I can’t tell you the specific figures and timetable. As expected, the number of data centers will increase by 30- 50%.”
