In order to help Chinese Android developers seamlessly connect to the global 64-bit development environment, China’s top five mobile app stores Xiaomi App Store, OPPO App Store, Vivo App Store, Tencent App Store, Baidu Mobile Assistant, recently announced that all applications released in each application store in the future must support the 64-bit Arm architecture in an orderly manner.
All applications and games must upload APKs containing 64-bit builds as planned before the end of this year including existing application updates and new versions released. So that all mobile Android applications on the Chinese market can be prepared for the full popularization of 64-bit architecture by the end of August 2022.
Previously, Arm first announced in October 2020 that all Arm Cortex-A CPU cores will only support 64-bit code execution from 2022. Now it has further announced that from 2023, all Cortex-A series mobile CPUs both the kernels big and small will only support 64 bits.
Since the launch of the first 64-bit mobile device in June 2014, the number of 32-bit phones has been declining. According to domestic data, the proportion of mobile phones that only support 32-bit applications is far less than one percent.
As the development focus of Android mobile applications shifts to 64-bit, the upstream and downstream of the ecosystem will be able to focus on supporting new features and new technologies that were not available based on the 32-bit architecture in the past.
