Mac and Macbook Pros often come with a substantial amount of storage space. When downloading a massive number of files, or using a computer as a database or file storage solution, you may find that space quickly disappearing.
To ensure that you always have enough space to store your information, install secondary storage in both Mac Pros and Macbook Pros. Both involve a little manual work, but you will guarantee storage that will last for years.
Install Larger Hard Drives Into A Mac Pro
- Unplug the Mac tower from its power source.
- Place the computer on a static-free mat.
- Discharge any static electricity in your tools by touching your screwdriver to the metal handle of the computer tower.
- Pull the latch on the side of the computer tower and open the side panel.
- Take one of the unused hard drive enclosures of the Mac Pro tower. These will be four rectangular aluminum cases aligned side-by-side across the tower body. Find the rear latch at the back of the tower, and pull up. The four red slots above each enclosure will slide to the “Open” position. Pull out the enclosure. In default configurations, the far-left tray contains the main hard drive.
- Remove the four Philips-head screws from the enclosure.
- Remove your new hard drive from its static-free package and place it into the enclosure, with its four screw holes aligned with the screw holes of the enclosure.
- Secure the hard drive to the enclosure with the four screws.
- Reinsert the enclosure into the Mac Pro tower. Secure the rear latch and replace the side panel.
- Turn on the computer, and reformat the hard drive for Mac OSX. Click “Finder | Go | Utilities | Disk Utility.app.” Click the “Erase” tab. Select the new hard drive from the menu on the left of the window. Select “Mac OS Extended” from the “Format” drop-down menu and click the “Erase” button.
