Foldable smartphones market raised in the third quarter of 2021: DSCC

The foldable smartphone market seems to have arisen in the third quarter of 2021. Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 during this quarter. In the third quarter of 2021, foldable smartphones Shipments reached 2.6 million, and Samsung’s market share reached 93%.

A new report from DSCC revealed that Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 led the sales of foldable smartphones in the third quarter, and both models contributed to unprecedented growth. Huawei follows Samsung with 6% of the foldable mobile phone market.

In the third quarter, shipments of foldable smartphones from all brands but mainly Samsung increased by 215% quarter-on-quarter and 480% year-on-year. In the third quarter, the foldable mobile phone market shipped approximately 2.6 million units. DSCC estimates that foldable smartphone shipments in the fourth quarter will be close to 4 million. By the end of this year, Samsung’s market share may further increase to 95%.

Moreover, Samsung’s foldable smartphone shipments should exceed 6 million units, which is consistent with the company’s goal earlier this year. By 2022, it is estimated that shipments in the foldable mobile phone market will reach around 17.5 million, much higher than this year’s 7.5 million.

Furthermore, Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the most popular foldable smartphone in the third quarter of 2021, proving that the compact form factor and lower price have great appeal. Galaxy Z Flip 3’s market share in the third quarter was 60%, surpassing the 23% market share of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the 7% market share of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G.

It is expected that Galaxy Z Flip 3 will still dominate in the fourth quarter of 2021, with a share of 58%, but Galaxy Z Fold 3 should catch up and cover 36% of the market.
