Apple confirms some SD cards not working properly on the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro 2021

According to the latest report, a large number of Apple’s new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro users reported that there was a problem with the SD card reader slot and some SD cards could not work properly.

MacRumors detailed the problems they encountered when using certain SD cards. Allegedly, there seems to be a little commonality between the affected SD cards. Some SD cards will crash and become inaccessible, and some SD cards will simply have unusually slow transfer speeds.

@Wildc t said: The 14-inch M1 Pro has the same problem. It just looks very weird and has different performances. Half the chance it will successfully recognize the SD (although it takes 30 seconds to 1 minute), and half the chance it will throw you an error directly, especially for all Sandisk Ultra cards. Including XC and HC. I tried reformatting with the camera and MBP, but it didn’t help. It is worth mentioning that all my SD cards can work normally in my other 3 USB card readers.

@2Stepfan said: This is very disappointing. How I hope the new 14″ MBP can quickly preview the images imported from the SD card. I have a 99 new 64GB SD card, which has worked normally before. But it takes several minutes to display the photos when using the MBP’s built-in SD card slot. Sometimes it crashes halfway directly, and sometimes the Finder crashes.

So far, the format does not seem to be the cause, but it may indeed be a factor. Moreover, there seems to be no common clue as to which SD cards can work and which ones cannot, but multiple users have reported that when the SD card slot is not working, the SD card reader can still be used via USB-C.

@wilberforce states: I tried a lot of cards, no matter the brand, size, type, format, or time of use, the problem seems to be completely random. The only thing that is the same is that if the SD card can work normally, it can always work normally, if not, it will never work. Even if you try to reformat and try all other possible formats, it makes no difference. SanDisk, Sony, Samsung, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, UHS-I, UHS-II, micro-SD, FAT32, exFAT, no area at all. But 100% of my card can run perfectly through the dongle.

Some users who have reported back to Apple have been told that the company is aware of this problem and will fix it in future software updates, but it is not clear whether this is a hardware problem or a software problem. Some users who had problems replaced their MacBook Pro and did not continue to experience problems, so this problem is still a mystery.

Moreover, a user reported that the macOS Monterey 12.1 beta version has fixed this problem, but another person on Reddit said that the latest beta version still has this problem, so we don’t know if macOS Monterey 12.1 has a fix.
