AMD may use Samsung’s 4nm process to make Chromebook CPUs

AMD has been relying on GF and TSMC to manufacture GPUs and processors for many years. According to a research report by JPMorgan Chase, AMD may seek Samsung’s foundry for its Chromebook entry-level processors, which will use 4nm process technology. The new product is expected to be mass-produced by the end of 2022.

JPMorgan Chase analysts said that TSMC’s current production capacity is limited, so AMD has to seek Samsung foundry. AMD initially relied almost entirely on GF foundry chips before turning to TSMC. This is because AMD and GF signed a wafer supply agreement earlier, excluding other foundries.

Moreover, AMD has not yet used the latest 5nm and 4nm process technology, and is relatively conservative in this regard. AMD chooses Samsung’s first batch of products as entry-level CPUs. If the results are satisfactory, it is expected that more kinds of chips will also be manufactured using the latest process technology.

JPMorgan Chase analysts believe that AMD may use Samsung’s 3nm process to manufacture chips in 2023/2024, but most core products, such as desktops, workstations, and server CPUs, still choose TSMC for foundry.
