Apple creating a new classical music version of Apple Music

Posted on

According to the latest report, after acquiring the classical music service Primephonic earlier this year, a recent job posting showed that Apple is working on a new music application dedicated to classical music.

Earlier this year, Apple announced that it had acquired Primephonic, a classical music streaming service, and would incorporate it into Apple Music. Primephonic provides an “excellent listening experience” with search and browsing functions optimized for classical music, as well as carefully selected recommendations and “background details of repertoire and recording.”

Apple said that after acquiring Primephonic, Apple Music users will get a better classical music experience. Allegedly, this will start with Primephonic playlists and audio content, followed by a dedicated Primephonic experience, improved browsing and search functions by composer and repertoire, better classical music metadata, and more.

Most notably, Apple said that it will launch a new Apple Music application dedicated to classical music in 2022. The application will combine Primephonic’s user interface and the professionalism of classical music with Apple Music and features such as lossless and spatial audio.

According to the recruitment information on the Apple recruitment website, Apple is now looking for a user experience designer to work for the new application in the classical music team. The position is located in London or Amsterdam and is expected to “provide user experience expertise and new perspectives exclusively for Primephonic.” The job posting continues to explain that Apple is exploring and creating a unique classical music experience, including “visual, auditory and tactile aspects.”

Although the recruitment information indicates that the Primephonic brand will continue to be used for new applications, Primephonic has been offline on September 7, 2021, and will no longer be available to new users. Current Primephonic users get 6 months of free use of Apple Music and can get thousands of classical albums that support lossless and spatial audio.

The Primephonic website now tells visitors, “We are working hard to provide an amazing neo-classical music experience for Apple at the beginning of next year.” It is unclear to what extent the Primephonic brand will persist in the new application, and to what extent it will merge with Apple Music.
