Apple M1 Max MacBook Pro more powerful than 2019 Mac Pro: ProRes benchmark test

According to the latest report, Apple’s MacBook Pro notebook M1 Max’s benchmark test of ProRes video export shows that the high-end 2021 MacBook Pro is three times faster than the 2019 Mac Pro.

Macworld pointed out that even if you install the $2,000 Afterburner accelerator card on the Mac Pro, the M1 Max MacBook Pro is still twice as fast. To reach the highest echelon of ProRes performance on the 2019 Mac Pro, you need a 28-core Intel Xeon W CPU paired with an Afterburner accelerator card to accelerate ProRes playback and decoding. In terms of advanced color correction, two powerful GPUs will also help. Of course, all of this comes at a high price.

The M1 Max in MacBook Pro includes two ProRes encoders and decoders, far exceeding the single decoder in MacPro’s Afterburner accelerator card. These benchmark tests show how seriously Apple is working on its ProRes performance.

Due to the decoder and encoder in the M1 Max, it single-handedly surpassed the highest specification 2019 Mac Pro. Not only that, it will greatly improve the playback performance of multi-stream 8K content.

Color grading also benefits generally, and the noise reduction and stabilization in Final Cut Pro are also very fast. This is traditionally the domain of super-powered workstations or Mac Pros equipped with expensive GPUs, but the implementation of ProRes makes the playing field fairer and greatly reduces the cost of entry. “

Moreover, the benchmark test of the website shows that the time required to export a 5-minute ProRes Raw video clip to ProRes 422 HQ is as follows:

  • 2019 Mac Pro: 233 seconds

  • 2019 Mac Pro with Afterburner accelerator card: 153 seconds

  • 2021 MacBook Pro with M1 Max chip: 76 seconds

The website Thiago Trevisan believes that the ability to shoot ProRes videos on the iPhone 13 Pro / Pro Max is currently a gimmick, but it will become more important over time.

“At present, it is more like a novel feature, although it can be used as a situational tool that professionals may use. With the improvement of mobile phone storage capacity in the future, even ordinary users will use this feature more frequently. But please first Don’t sell your Red or Arri camera.”
