AMD plans to release a new generation of FSR technology

According to the latest report, AMD seems to be preparing to launch a new generation of AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) super-resolution sharpening technology.

Moreover, the sources found that AMD’s Thomas Arcila and Colin Riley will showcase “next-generation graphics upgrades for gaming” at GDC on March 23rd – which sounds very much like the successor to the FSR.

Additionally, benchmarking and monitoring software developer @CapFrameX claims he has seen FSR 2.0 demo footage. Allegedly, FSR 2.0 will be released soon.

Unlike XeSS and DLSS, it does not require AI acceleration, which means that the technology can be used on more common GPUs and is expected to be supported by all vendors, although there is no specific mention of which GPU architectures are supported.

It is expected that FSR 2.0 will not be officially released until at least the arrival of the RDNA3 architecture. Based on what is currently known, RDNA3 is scheduled to be released in the third or fourth quarter.

It is worth mentioning that since there is no requirement for AI acceleration, this technology may support normal shader cores, and may also support instructions like Intel XeSS (DP4a).

Furthermore, AMD will showcase its “next-generation game image scaling” technology at the 2022 Game Developers Conference in two weeks’ time on March 24, assuming FSR 2.0.

This time the GDC talk is relevant, then we may see more information on the technology as well as a real machine demonstration.

FSR is not the same as machine learning AI-based solutions like XeSS and DLSS 2.0, FSR is just a simple oversampling technique

These two techniques are not even comparable, just like resizing in Photoshop versus resizing in Gigapixel AI, the latter is definitely superior.
