Recently, the Firefox browser released the 98.0.1 version update. There is only one change in the official announcement: Russian search engines Yandex and Mail.ru have been removed from Firefox’s drop-down search menu.

Officially, if a user previously installed a custom version of Firefox with Yandex or Mail.ru, this version will remove those custom options, including add-ons and default bookmarks. Where applicable, the Firefox browser will revert to the default settings provided by Mozilla, and all other versions of Firefox will not be affected by this change.

In February this year, the Firefox Firefox browser website issued a note that after updating to Firefox 98, the default search engine for some users will be changed. Unable to obtain an official license to continue to include certain search engines in Firefox, engines that have not completed a signed agreement will be removed from Firefox.

So, it’s not clear what Mozilla’s official position is, and we can’t be sure that the motives for the removal are the same as other tech companies.
