Later this year, the 2022 Commonwealth Games will try e-sports for the first time. It will be called the Commonwealth E-sports Championship and will be held at the same time as the 2022 Commonwealth Games, but it will be independent of the 2022 Commonwealth Games. The Commonwealth Games have their own medals and organizations.

According to the official Olympic website, the Commonwealth Games Federation has confirmed the first list of games for e-sports, including “DOTA2”, “Pro Evolution Soccer 2022” and “Rocket League” will be selected for the first British Games to be held on August 6-7 Federal Esports Championship.

Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that only athletics and swimming are currently mandatory sports, so this could be the first and last Commonwealth eSports Championship. As a pilot e-sports event for the Commonwealth Games, the Commonwealth E-sports Championship will be held simultaneously with the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham.

Furthermore, the three events are divided into an open group and a women’s group, and exclusive prizes will be awarded medals. There is speculation that the Commonwealth’s pilot event this year is to prepare for a later Olympic Games, because e-sports may become an official Olympic event as soon as 2026.

Katie Sadleir, Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Games, said: “Together with the GEF, we are delighted to unveil the three main games for this summer’s Commonwealth eSports Championship in Birmingham. There is no doubt that this innovative and exciting event will Create new learning opportunities for us to further explore esports.”

Commonwealth Games Minister Nigel Huddleston said: “E-sports connects millions of young people across the Commonwealth to entertain and form an important sense of community.”
