Global Wafer will create a new 12-inch fab

According to the latest report, Global Wafer held a board meeting and disclosed its 2021 financial report at the meeting. Moreover, in the financial report, Global Wafer’s revenue in 2021 has successfully exceeded NT$60 billion, reaching NT$61.13 billion, a year-on-year increase of 10.4%.

Among them, the operating gross profit margin was NT$23.29 billion, the operating gross profit margin was 38.1%, a year-on-year increase of 0.9%, and the operating net profit was 28.9%, a year-on-year increase of 1.3%. In addition to the financial report data, Global Wafer also released important news: a new 12-inch wafer fab will be built in Italy.

Global Wafer said that its Italian subsidiary MEMC SPA will be equipped with a new 12-inch wafer production line in its existing plant, and will become the first 12-inch wafer fab in Italy, with production capacity planned to open in the second half of 2023.

Although just over a month ago, Global Wafer’s acquisition of Siltron Electronic Materials failed because it failed to obtain the approval of the German government within the deadline, Global Wafer obviously did not want to stop the pace of expansion.

Xu Xiulan, chairman and CEO of Universal Wafer, publicly stated that even if the public acquisition of Shichuang failed, a dual-track strategy had been formulated in advance. It can be seen that the Italian plant construction plan may be just one part of its dual-track strategy.

Furthermore, Global Wafer stated that it will invest NT$100 billion in capital expenditure within three years, and one of the key directions is to expand the new factory. The global chip shortage and the wave of digitization are both the current reality, and the vigorous expansion of global wafer production is also a response to the rapid growth in demand for semiconductor production capacity.
