Australian government re-upgraded supervision of Internet giants

According to the latest report, Australia’s media watchdog will force internet companies to provide internal data on how they deal with misinformation and disinformation, the latest step in the government’s crackdown on tech giants.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) will also enforce internet industry guidelines for uncooperative tech platforms, the federal government said on Monday (March 21, local time).

A report released by the ACMA found that 80 percent of Australian adults have experienced misinformation about COVID-19, and 76 percent believe online platforms should do more to reduce the amount of false and misleading content shared online.

Therefore, the Australian government plans to introduce relevant draft laws. The Australian draft law is broadly in line with what has been put forward by European counterparts, which will come into force by the end of 2022.

According to the ACMA report, Australians are most likely to see misinformation on large social services platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, which are owned by Meta Platforms, with false narratives often starting with “highly emotional and engaging posts with ulterior motives” and then “renewed”. magnified by media coverage.”

It is reported that DIGI, an Australian industry body representing Facebook, Alphabet’s Google, Twitter, and video site TikTok, expressed support for the Australian government’s policy.
