Ubisoft unveiled Cloud-Native Technology Ubisoft Scalar

Posted on

According to the latest report, before the opening of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Ubisoft announced an innovative cloud-native technology called Ubisoft Scalar.

Officials said that this technology can bring powerful cloud computing capabilities and flexibility to Ubisoft’s self-developed engine, thereby reducing the dependence on players’ hardware devices and bringing new possibilities for game development and player experience.

Moreover, the main technical research team of Ubisoft Scalar is Ubisoft Stockholm Studio, and Ubisoft’s Malmo Studio (Ubisoft Massive), Helsinki (Ubisoft Redlynx) Studio, Bucharest Studio, and Kyiv Studio all participated in the technology.

According to the official introduction, Ubisoft Scalar adopts a micro-service architecture to store each component and system of the traditional engine independently in the cloud, such as AI, sound effects, physics, etc., from the closed mode of today’s single-processor system to an unlimited number of machines based decentralized model.

Therefore, games developed using this technology can use unlimited computing power to achieve all-round breakthroughs, and the vastness, deep simulation, and environment construction of virtual worlds that were previously impossible to achieve can become a reality.

As one of the core design concepts, scale is also a key differentiating feature of Ubisoft Scalar. This technology self-optimizes the startup and termination of services based on player and developer behavior, using only the real-time computing power needed.

Moreover, this optimization is also suitable for compute-intensive tasks and can be cached and deployed globally to avoid double-computing existing data.

In addition, the flexibility of cloud computing can further help developers: when updating and optimizing one service, other services can be unaffected; when adding new features to the game, the play does not need to be interrupted. This means that there is no need to download patches anymore, and it will not take players’ time.
