New leak reveals Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 + SoC will be released in early May

Posted on

Qualcomm abandoned the Snapdragon 8XX naming scheme for its flagship processor lineup this year and changed it to the Snapdragon 8 brand, starting with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

However, that didn’t help the company fix the overheating and overheating throttling issues that plagued the Snapdragon 888, though Qualcomm may soon fix that with a new chip.

According to source Yogesh Brar, Qualcomm will release the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ (model SM8475) in early May 2022. The upcoming high-end chipset will be based on TSMC’s 4-nanometer semiconductor manufacturing process, which has been tested to be more efficient than Samsung’s foundry 4-nanometer process.

Moreover, Qualcomm is planning to transfer their flagship SoC orders to TSMC, as TSMC’s 4nm manufacturing process provides more yield and stable chips, and the SM8475 will be Qualcomm’s first chip based on TSMC’s 4nm process.

Furthermore, smartphone OEMs have already received the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+, as well as the chipsets of the Snapdragon 700 series that will be unveiled at the same time. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ will be available on flagship models as early as June 2022, with the first phase of the customer list including Lenovo, Motorola, OnePlus, and Xiaomi.

The recent acceleration in Qualcomm’s new chip launch cycle can be attributed to several factors, including performance issues low yields, and the challenges Qualcomm faces from MediaTek.

The MediaTek Dimensity 9000, Dimensity 8100, and Dimensity 8000 chips all show impressive performance gains, and they cost less than Qualcomm’s solutions, which are actively working to minimize their losses. This rumor has some credibility, given that the Qualcomm 5G Summit will be held from May 9 to 11.
