The first-generation AI chips are based on CPU and GPU; the second-generation AI chips are based on FPGAs and ASICs; the third-generation AI chips are neuromorphic chips (aka “brain-like chips”).

Neuromorphic chips feature the ability to mimic human neurons and synapses and operate in an entirely new configuration. At present, the field of artificial intelligence is developing towards the application of third-generation artificial intelligence chips.

Currently, South Korea leads the field of artificial intelligence neuromorphic chips. In the field of artificial intelligence, the number of patent applications in the United States and mainland China accounted for 37% and 36% of the total number of patent applications, respectively, and the number of patent applications in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan accounted for 8% of the total number of patent applications, respectively.

In the field of neuromorphic chips, the share of patent applications in South Korea is 18%, and the share of patent applications in Japan and Taiwan is 4% and 2%, respectively. According to Business Korea, Intel, IBM, and Samsung Electronics are the leading companies in the field of artificial intelligence chips.

In the field of artificial intelligence neuromorphic chips, among the two semiconductor giants in South Korea, Samsung Electronics ranks second in the world, and SK Hynix ranks fifth.
