Moreover, Samsung said that the two parties will first work on creating a vibrant ecosystem for partitioned storage solutions. The two parties have launched a plan for partitioned storage devices, including ZNS (Zone Namespace) SSD (Solid State Drive), and SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording) HDD (Hard Disk Drive).

According to reports, through organizations such as SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association) and the Linux Foundation, Samsung and Western Digital will define advanced models and frameworks for next-generation partitioned storage technologies.

Moreover, the two parties established the Partitioned Storage TWG (Technical Working Group), which was approved by the Global Network Storage Industry Association (SNIA) in December 2021. Currently, technical groups are defining and specifying common use cases for partitioned storage devices, as well as host/device architectures and programming models.

Furthermore, Samsung noted that this collaboration is expected to be the starting point for expanding partition-based device interfaces such as ZNS, SMR, and next-generation mass storage devices with enhanced data placement and processing technologies.

In subsequent phases, the partnership program will expand to other emerging D2PF technologies such as computational storage and storage fabrics (including NVMe-oF).
