MediaTek supports migration of mobile computing ecosystem to 64-bit

According to the latest report, MediaTek issued a document saying that as an ecological partner of Android and Arm, MediaTek also supports the migration of the mobile computing ecosystem to 64-bit. MediaTek says the transition of the Android ecosystem to 64-bit is the best way to enable next-generation compute-intensive workloads and experiences on mobile devices.

In terms of application startup speed, the test results conducted by MediaTek Labs based on the Dimensity 9000 mobile platform show that the cold startup speed of 64-bit applications can bring 13% – 60% improvement compared to 32-bit applications, which is clearly perceived by users.

In terms of game performance that players care about, the test results of the Unity Engine “Armies” Demo show that compiling the game to a 64-bit version can bring a 16% increase in frame rate compared to 32-bit.

According to reports, the results of Arm lab tests show that compared with 32-bit computing, 64-bit computing on smartphones can bring more than 90% performance improvement when compressing files and nearly 80% faster when decompressing.

In terms of power consumption, 64-bit applications have better power consumption performance than 32-bit applications. Compared with the 32-bit computing environment, the mainstream mobile processor architecture can achieve 13.2% to 35.2% energy efficiency improvement in the 64-bit computing environment, which means that the processor needs less power to complete the same calculation.

In order to further promote the transition of the domestic Android application ecosystem to the 64-bit architecture, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi have jointly announced that from April 2022, new apps on the OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi app stores will not be allowed to stand alone.

Moreover, the 32-bit application package is listed, which can support uploading with a compatibility package or dual package; game applications are not limited for the time being.
