According to the latest report, Windows File Explorer’s tag support is one of the most requested features in the feedback center. In the past, Microsoft has tried to bring it to users through Windows Sets.
Work on Windows Sets was eventually abandoned, but instead of giving up on the idea of setting tabs in File Explorer, Microsoft started work on File Explorer tabs again.

At the Windows Mixed Office conference, Microsoft officially confirmed that future Windows 11 previews will have a new File Explorer. The much-anticipated tabs feature is now live in the internally built explorer, with a public rollout expected later this year, with testers getting tabs soon.
Moreover, Microsoft has yet to add a new File Explorer to the Windows 11 preview, but the company previewed its new design at the event. File Explorer’s tabs are similar to Microsoft Edge’s tabs. Users can create new tabs, drag and drop tabs, and can now select tabs or windows when right-clicking.
Microsoft says File Explorer has been designed and supported in the cloud, so users will get file suggestions from their Microsoft 365 account. It’s easier to find what users are looking for, and if you buy a Microsoft 365 subscription, you can see all your files in one place.
Furthermore, Microsoft is also adding a new File Explorer home page, including typical Quick Access folders, recent files, and a new Favorites option. Users will soon be able to right-click a file to add it to Favorites and it will appear on the home page of File Explorer. There are even improved file-sharing options, with an updated sharing dialog that lets users send to recent contacts or apps like Teams, Outlook, and OneDrive.
These improvements are expected to roll out with Windows 11 version 22H2 (Sun Valley 2), and Microsoft is also working on some new features for the taskbar and Start menu. For example, the Start menu will gain folder support, and the taskbar will be updated to support drag and drop.
