Control of Russian hackers’ domains to protect Ukraine from cyberattacks: Microsoft

software updates

According to the latest report, Microsoft revealed that it has taken control of seven Internet domains controlled by the Russian-related hacking entity Strontium.

The domains were used in cyberattacks against Ukrainian institutions such as media organizations, as well as U.S. and European government agencies and think tanks involved in foreign policy, Microsoft said.

Moreover, the domains were seized after Microsoft obtained a court order on April 6. Microsoft has long grappled with Strontium and has a process in place to quickly obtain a court order to take action against the group’s hacking activities.

With control of the domain name, Microsoft has redirected it to a sinkhole it runs to keep users safe and notify victims of attacks.

Tom Burt, corporate vice president of customer security and trust at Microsoft, said: This achievement is part of an ongoing long-term investment that began in 2016 to take legal and technical action to seize the infrastructure used by Strontium.

We have established a legal process to obtain an expedited court decision for this work. Before this week, we had gone through this process 15 times to seize control of more than 100 Strontium-controlled domains.

Furthermore, Microsoft said in early March that it would protect Ukraine’s cybersecurity and help Ukrainian cybersecurity officials defend against Russian attacks, and has taken measures against more than 20 Russian cyber operations.
