It is reported that the proposal was approved by a 12-0 vote. The plan, announced Wednesday by lawmakers Mitch O’Farrell and Paul Krekorian aims to become one of the first U.S. cities to rely on carbon-free energy by 2035.
However, specific issues such as the time frame and the specific investment amount have not been announced. The transition will begin with the city’s largest health, recreation, and transportation departments.
Currently, California is accelerating its electrification process, and the U.S. Department of Energy says California is the state with the highest adoption rate of electric vehicles. The data showed that California had 425,300 LEV registrations in 2020, with Florida and Texas in second and third place, respectively. But for government agencies, the process lags far behind.
In addition, the city plans to significantly increase the charging infrastructure. Los Angeles has installed 350 charging units over the past five years, and officials say the city will need an estimated 97,000 more EV charging stations by 2030.
