8-inch fab’s capacity to surge 21% between 2020-2024: SEMI
In its 200mm Fab Outlook Report, SEMI said that from early 2020 to the end of 2024, global semiconductor manufacturers are expected to increase 8-inch fab capacity by 1.2 million wafers, or 21%, to reach an all-time high of 6.9 million tablets per month.

After climbing to $5.3 billion last year, 8-inch fab equipment spending is expected to reach $ 4.9 billion in 2022 as 8-inch fab utilization remains high and the global semiconductor industry grapples with chip shortages.
“Wafer manufacturers will add 25 new 8-inch production lines over five years to help meet 5G, automotive and Internet of Things (IoT) devices that rely on analog, power management and display driver ICs, MOSFETs, MCUs and sensors applications,” said Ajit Manocha, President, and CEO of SEMI.
Regionally, mainland China will lead the world in 8-inch capacity with 21% in 2022, followed by Japan at 16%, Taiwan, and Europe/Middle East at 15% each.
